Video Manager
Introduction
------------
Video Manager is an easy way of storing and recalling details of programs you
have on video. The program allows you to store the lengths of your tapes, the
titles of the programs, the lengths of the programs and channels that were
recorded and saves the need for repeatedly scribbling on your video labels.
The program has been written with speed and ease of use in mind, as there is
no point spending hours typing in your video details if it is simpler to write
them on a piece of paper. The quickest way to use the program is to put it
first in a startup-sequence on a disk of its own, which you can handily boot
up when needed.
Using the program
-----------------
When you run the program the video screen appears. On the left are the boxes
in which you fill in the video details and on the right is the control pad.
Standard video symbols have been used to represent various program functions.
The CONTROL PAD.

The above symbols represent the keys of the control box. In the instructions
the following names refer to the keys as listed below.

Adding a new video.
-------------------
When first running the program the initial screen displays a blank set of
details which you can fill in, but normally to add a video you must click on
the ADD key with your left mouse button and then enter the following details.
First click in the top left hand box ( 'Tape' ) and enter the type of tape
that you are adding, eg E240, E180, etc. Make sure that this includes the
length of the tape (in minutes) because the program uses this number for
mapping the contents of a video.
Deleting a video.
-----------------
It is not often necessary to delete a video, because usually you replace a
tape rather than re-numbering all your videos. However it is often useful
to delete a video at the end of a list (eg. if you have accidentally added
too many videos). To delete a video click on the DELETE button.
Entering program details.
-------------------------
When entering the details of a program you have recorded for the first time,
start by clicking in and entering the title in the top of the first column
headed 'Title'. Then enter the length in the middle column (in the form HH:MM,
(hours:minutes) ) and the channel in the right column (eg BBC1, ITV, SKY etc.)
Always enter the true running time for the length and not an adjusted time for
LONG PLAY recordings.
When entering the details of subsequent programs recorded, fill in the boxes
beneath those already used, unless you are taping over a programs.
You can specify a program recorded in Long Play or Short Play (LP / SP) by
toggling the LP / SP gadget. This is the square box with a right pointing
arrow. The small arrow (initially shown) denotes SP and the long arrow LP.
To delete a program and it's details simply click on the circular button
gadget next to those details.
Saving the video details.
-------------------------
To save the details you have entered or edited, click on the RECORD button
with your left mouse button or select SAVE from the file menu. A disk with
write protect off should be in drive DF0:. When ever saving takes place the
old file is backed up and your new details are then saved. The files which
the program creates and uses are DF0:VMS/VIDEOS and DF0:VMS/VIDEOS.BAK.
Restoring the Backup File.
--------------------------
If you accidentally save incorrect data and wish to get back the details that
were previously loaded you can select Get Backup from the file menu. This then
loads the VIDEOS.BAK file which was backed up the last time you saved.
NOTE: You should re-save this data after making your correct changes.
Loading Video details.
----------------------
To load previously saved details either click on the PLAY button with your
left mouse button or select load from the file menu. The details are then
loaded from the VIDEOS file (in DF0:) and the first video's details are
displayed.
Using the CONTROL box keypad.
-----------------------------
The number and the carriage return keys allow you to view and edit a video's
details by typing that video's number and pressing the carriage return button.
e.g. To view video number 8, click on the 0, then 0, then 8 buttons and
finally on the carriage return button.
To view video 10 click on 0, 1, 0, <CR>.
The number you select appears in the digital display at the bottom right of
the control box.
Find Functions.
---------------
All find functions are selected from the find menu. When selected the first
record is shown. Press the EJECT button (in the find box) to quit the find.
Find Title: In the box that appears type in the title or part title to be
found. To search forwards or backwards from the current record
use the FORWARD WIND and REWIND buttons in the find box.
Find Space: Enter the space to be found in the form HH:MM and use the
FORWARD WIND and REWIND buttons as above.
Find Empty: This function finds blank cassettes in your list. Use as before.
Create List.
------------
Create list produces an alphabetically sorted list of all your videos, and
writes it to DF0: as a file called VID_LIST. This file is in ASCII format
and can be edited, and/or sent to a printer.
